Our goal is to recognize our success as a community over the past year but also emphasize that the fight is far from over\, it’s a marathon\, not a sprint. We will want to provide Idaho women with an opportunity to participate and be heard. We will also block off a section for individuals with accessibility needs at the Capitol. \nParking:\nAll metered parking in the downtown area is free on the weekend. You can also park in any of the garages for a cost. It is hard to anticipate how the parking will be downtown because this is a first-time grassroots event! We encourage people to carpool because it saves our planet and provides a great opportunity to meet your fellow marchers! Alternatively\, you can park outside of the downtown area and use Uber or Lyft to get you the rest of the way. \nTypes of signs: There are no restrictions on the type of signs you can bring to this march. Signs with sticks as handles are allowed. \nAll proceeds from books and extra donated money will go to the Women’s and Children’s Alliance \nOfficial Statement from People for Unity:\nLast year the Women’s March on Idaho brought thousands of Idahoans to the streets of Boise. This year\, on January 21st\, 2018 on the Idaho State Capitol Building steps from 10:00 AM-1:00 PM\, People for Unity will be celebrating the one year anniversary of the largest march in Idaho’s history. This event will recognize our success as a community over the past year but also emphasize that the fight is far from over\, it’s a marathon\, not a sprint. The event will take place outside the Capitol Building and speeches by the newly elected Boise City Councilwomen\, Lisa Sanchez\, Capital High School activist Fanisee Bias\, Mistie Tolman from Planned Parenthood\, and Nicole LeFavour will be given. Following the speeches\, we will chant and booths from AAUW\, Planned Parenthood\, and many more will be present so the community can sign up to volunteer and get involved. This event will also be the release of an inspirational coffee table book of the comical and powerful signs and posters from last year’s march. All proceeds from this event will go to The Women’s and Children’s Alliance. Join the organizers of last year’s march to continue our push for social justice.

SUMMARY:MLK Day of Greatness March and Rally
DESCRIPTION:Each year Boise State University’s MLK Living Legacy Celebration kicks off with the Day of Greatness March and Rally. The 2018 event will begin at 9 a.m. Monday\, Jan. 15\, in the Student Union Jordan Ballroom. \nEveryone is invited to make posters to carry down Capitol Boulevard to a rally on the Statehouse steps. Materials will be provided to make posters and student speakers will be featured at the rally. \nA keynote address featuring Melissa Harris-Perry\, the Maya Angelou Presidential Chair at Wake Forest University\, will be presented at 7 p.m. Monday\, Jan. 22\, in the Jordan Ballroom. \nHarris-Perry is the faculty director of the Pro Humanitate Institute and founding director of the Anna Julia Cooper Center at Wake forest University. She hosted the television show “Melissa Harris-Perry” from 2012-2016 weekend mornings on MSNBC and was editor-at-large for Elle.com from 2016-2017. \nHarris-Perry is the author of the award-winning “Barbershops\, Bibles\, and BET: Everyday Talk and Black Political Thought”\, and “Sister Citizen: Shame\, Stereotypes\, and Black Women in America.” \nThe purpose of the annual celebration is to evoke in students — in everyone — a passion for human rights\, and to use Dr. King’s example of positive change while respecting others’ unique individuality and beliefs. SUMMARY:Medicaid Expansion Campaign Boise Kick-Off Event
DESCRIPTION:Join the Boise/Ada team for the campaign to get Medicaid Expansion on the 2018 ballot so 78\,000 Idahoans currently “in the gap” can get the healthcare they need. At this Kick-Off event\, Medicaid for Idaho will provide volunteers with training\, food/drink\, petitions & supplies. After training\, volunteers will join District Leaders and walk to targeted households in neighborhoods near the Cathedral of the Rockies to gather signatures\, then return to debrief\, get petitions notarized & sign up for future canvassing dates/locations in districts 14 through 21. \nReclaim Idaho’s Luke Mayville will be on hand to kick off the Campaign and fire up volunteers\, with help from the Idaho Peace Band. \nPlease bring your smartphone or iPad/tablet if you have one\, as we will be using aps to map out targeted households\, check to make sure people are registered to vote before signing the petitions and to register voters on the spot\, if desired. Dress warm & wear comfortable walking shoes/boots. \nInfo on the campaign and petitions can be found at Medicaid For Idaho. \nPlease RSVP for the Jan. 13 Kick-Off to Sam Sandmire or Tracy Olson – Tracy Olson so we know how many volunteers to expect. \nPlease share this event on your Facebook Timeline and invite your friends. Read the instructions carefully\, then please DO take petitions to gatherings of your family & friends/book club/church/social events/etc. and gather signatures of registered voters in Ada County.
