The Idaho State Legislature should uphold students’ right to learn about climate change.
Why This Matters
In 2016, the Idaho State Legislature removed five key references to human-caused climate change from the K-12 science standards. The Weather Channel called these the “least adequate science standards in the country with regard to climate change.” Without a baseline for talking about climate change in our science standards, students around the state are denied access to conversations about one of the most pressing issues in Idaho.
Education is the first step in empowering students and equipping them with knowledge necessary to confront climate change, safeguard Idaho’s economy and the environment. Not providing equal access to information across the state leads in inequality in education and leaves students behind. Education should not be determined by zip code.
We need the Legislature to adopt the updated science standards that were approved by the Idaho State Board of Education and include references to anthropogenic climate change.
Help stand up for Idaho students and demand that climate change is mandatory to educate statewide so we can give the next generation the necessary tools to combat one of the greatest issues of our time. Sign our petition and join us in sending a message to our state legislature that we want to defend students’ right to a climate science education.
